Terror attacks on places of worships in India
Wed, 14 May 2008 21:21:59 PDT
The trend of bombing places of worship started with Sankat Mochan temple of Varanasi in 2006. Hanuman temple of Jaipur was attacked on Tuesday, busiest day for the temple. Six attacks since March 2006 have targeted 4 Mosques, 2 temple and a graveyard killing at least 78 people and injuring hundreds. May 13, 2008: S

...or, how to perform the most elementary null hypothesis significance tests. Roger Pielke has been saying some truly bizarre and nonsensical things recently. The pick of the bunch IMO is this post. The underlying question is: Are the models consistent with the observations over the last 8 years? So Roger takes the ensemble of model outputs (8 year trend as analysed in this RC post), and then plots some observational estimates (about which more later), which clearly lie well inside the 95% ran

The Cowboy’s Guide to Doing Business
Wed, 14 May 2008 22:52:57 PDT
The American cowboy has long been a source of myth and legend, stemming from the perception of the Old West. Their way of doing business is comparable to independent entrepreneurs who want to make in it the world and from their example there will be something to learn for your venture. Though movies have portrayed cowboys differently from what their real purpose is, what is common with the silver screen and with reality is that cowboys value personal honesty and integrity. Being honest with y

It is admission time in India for undergraduate engineering courses now. If trends of the last year are taken to be an indication, the computer science and electronics branches of engineering are going to have maximum demand. The traditional engineering branches like Mechanical and Civil Engineering could be branches with least rush. In many engineering colleges they are abolishing seats allocated to Civil and Mechanical Engineering and replacing it with Computer Science, Electronics and IT bran

Fashion and style Cannes Film Festival 2008
Wed, 14 May 2008 23:14:55 PDT
The stars put on their most glamorous gowns for a most popular and biggest internetional film festival called Cannes as Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman stole the show, but what Julianne Moore wore was criminal. Flounces, ruffles and clever draping in pale pastel palettes were popular trends on the red carpet at the 61st Cannes...
The economic implications of power
Wed, 14 May 2008 23:21:27 PDT
I was in a meeting with Cisco yesterday where they talked of the work they are doing with respect to greening the network in the data centre. Basically, they said, you can increase the efficiency of a data centre by decreasing the number of ports that each server uses. With virtualisation on the rise, that is apparently a big concern. The newest switches apparently take 10 watts of power on each side of the cable to run. Add that up over thousands of ports and you can see the point. Actually,

Some eclectic reading for those of you in the mood for some thought-provoking non-news-driven stuff: Should stare decisis doctrine apply to U.S. Supreme Court's doctrine of stare decisis? (SSRN) Top ten tech trends, according to VCs, plus some amusing riffing on Steve Jurvetson's opacity (Savitz) 19th century whaling as a model for oil depletion and price volatility (TOD)
Top 10 tech trends: The boomer Internet, smart phones and more
Wed, 14 May 2008 23:33:33 PDT
The Churchill Club of Silicon Valley just wrapped up one of its most anticipated events: the Annual Top Ten Tech Trends Debate. Five well-known and opinionated venture capitalists weighed-in on the million-dollar question: What trends will take flight and what trends will fizzle out in the months ahead? (The VCs are pictured, from left to right: Steve Jurvetson, Vinod Khosla, Josh Kopelman, Roger McNamee, Joe Schoendorf.) The audience of around 300 people was asked whether it agreed or disa
Climate Scientists Agree on Warming, Disagree on Dangers, and Don’t Trust the Media’s Coverage of Climate Change
Wed, 14 May 2008 23:33:39 PDT
A slight majority (54%) believe the warming measured over the last 100 years is not “within the range of natural temperature fluctuation.” A slight majority (56%) see at least a 50-50 chance that global temperatures will rise two degrees Celsius or more during the next 50 to 100 years. (The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cites this increase as the point beyond which additional warming would produce major environmental disruptions.) Based on current trends, 41% of sc

JOURNAL: Why use the Thermodynamic Crisis as a framework? Posted: 14 May 2008 11:49 AM CDT As many of you already know, a large part of what I do is to provide people with useful frameworks for thinking through difficult or complex problems. To the extent that these frameworks get you thinking (even if you disagree with me, which is encouraged), they are a success. The benefit of using the "Thermodynamic Crisis" as a framework is that it is a relatively complete and simple explanation for many o

Today being my 40th birthday, time is somewhat precious to me and mine. I don’t relish the idea of spending any more of my forty-something than I have to on this degree, so I have set a very ambitious goal to be done with my doctoral dissertation in a year. Even as I map out the short-term projects and paper deadlines to put me on that aggressive pace, a larger question looms: What happens next? One of the attractions of an Informatics degree in a new program is the ability to apply it to acad

The Rise of Contextual User Interfaces
Wed, 14 May 2008 23:59:08 PDT
Web 2.0 has brought many wonderful innovations and ideas to the Internet. We can no longer imagine the web without a social dimension, and we can no longer imagine an online world that is read-only - it is now a read/write web full of user-generated content. But there is another fairly recent innovation, which might have just as profound implications. We're speaking of the contextual user interface. Even five years ago we lived in the boxed world of Windows-dominated UIs. There were standard
